Japanese gaming company Square Enix has announced that it will be using Polygon, an Ethereum sidechain, as the basis for Symbiogenesis, the upcoming Web3 experience. Naoyuki Tamate, the game’s producer, cited the high transaction speeds and low transaction gas costs as the reasons for making this change to the game’s design.

Square Enix to Leverage Polygon for Symbiogenesis Blockchain Operations

Japanese game development company Square Enix has given an update on the development of Symbiogenesis, its upcoming Web3-based experience announced in November. The body reveal it would use Polygon, an EVM-compatible sidechain, to support part of the blockchain component of the game.

The game, which will have some non-mungible art tokens (NFTs) as part of its story, revolves around the realization of a mission and the gathering of resources in a country known as the floating continent. Regarding the use of the Polygon network in the game, Symbiogenesis producer Naoyuki Tamate at Square Enix said:

Square Enix chose to take advantage of Polygon’s high transaction speeds, low gas fees, and its overall user friendliness to deliver this unique experience to Web3 fans.

Square Enix previously said that the game would use Ethereum as part of its structure. However, he clarified through Twitter that the Polygon blockchain would be used for the game utility, and Ethereum would be used for the NFT collectible art component.

Web3 Gambling Still Relevant

Although some blockchain gaming trends – such as the play-to-earn model – have declined significantly as part of the recent turbulence in the cryptocurrency market, there are still some companies that believe in the possibilities that decentralized structures can bring to experiences gambling.

Urvit Goel, vice president of global games and platform business development at Polygon Labs, believes that Web3 adoption in games will continue to grow, as developers realize the benefits of this model. On this, Goel explained:

Our latest collaboration shows that Web3 is definitely gaining more and more traction among the world’s leading developers, proving once again the enormous potential of this innovative technology stack and the benefits they bring to gambling.

While Symbiogenesis appears to be the first AAA game designed from the ground up with blockchain elements, this isn’t Square Enix’s first dance with blockchain. The company is currently a collector in Oasys, a Web3 blockchain initiative focused on gaming. It also announced in January that it has several original blockchain IP games in development, and is set to unveil more of them this year.
